Acknowledgements I could not have completed my Ph.D. without the support, guidance, and friendship of many people; it is a pleasure to acknowledge a few of them here. First, I thank my parents for their patient support and encouragement through these many years of schooling. I cannot express my gratitude to them for enabling me to pursue a career based solely on intellectual interest. They have been my first and best teachers. I thank my sister Heather for blazing the Ph.D. trail and dropping breadcrumbs to help me find my way. Six years ago, I did not know that the field of theoretical ecology existed (it does). My love of it arose largely because of the guidance of my advisor, Alan Hastings. His enthusiasm and expertise helped me gain a foothold in a field that I expect will provide me with a lifetime of challenges and rewards. He is also a Zen master of thesis advising; his subtle hints and mild suggestions kept me on course even as I pursued questions of my own devising. I thank Janko Gravner for teaching me probability, and Carole Hom and Ed Caswell–Chen for their careful comments on my manuscripts. Finally, and most importantly, I thank my wife Lisa for her kindness, intelligence, humor, and love. I took a fair amount of putting up with during this process; her encouragement kept me going when I doubted the outcome. I am forever in her debt. Also, I thank John Elway for the Superbowl wins. And whoever invented doughnuts.

Behavioral study of piston manufacturing plant through stochastic models
Piston plays a vital role in almost all types of vehicles. The present study discusses the behavioral study of a piston manufacturing plant. Manufacturing plants are complex repairable systems and therefore, it is difficult to evaluate the performance of a piston manufacturing plant using stochastic models. The stochastic model is an efficient performance evaluator for repairable systems. In...

Multi site modeling of rainfall is one of the most important issues in environmental sciences especially in watershed management. For this purpose, different statistical models have been developed which involve spatial approaches in simulation and modeling of daily rainfall values. The hidden Markov is one of the multi-site daily rainfall models which in addition to simulation of daily rainfall...
متن کاملSpatial Distribution Pattern of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) on Different Rosa Cultivars in Greenhouse Tehran
The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), is an economically important pest of ornamental plant in Iran. The population abundance and spatial distribution were studied on five Rosa cultivars including Maroussia, Wendela, Elderado, Wenedetta, and Hot Lady during two growing seasons of 2011 and 2012 in greenhouse. The k parameter, index of dispersion, Lloyd’s m...
متن کاملSPECIAL FEATURE – EDITORIAL ADVANCES IN PLANT DEMOGRAPHY USING MATRIX MODELS Matrix projection models meet variation in the real world
1. Projection matrices have become the dominant modelling approach in plant demography because they (i) are relatively easy to formulate, (ii) compile complex data in a structured and analytically tractable manner, (iii) provide numerous parameters with direct biological meaning, (iv) allow the investigator to address broad or specific, experimental and ⁄or theoretical, ecological and evolution...

The effect of spatial correlations on the spread of infectious diseases was investigated using a stochastic susceptible-infective-recovered (SIR) model on complex networks. It was found that in addition to the reduction of the effective transmission rate, through the screening of infectives, spatial correlations have another major effect through the enhancement of stochastic fluctuations, which...
متن کاملAge-varying bivariate distribution models for growth prediction
Height-diameter models are classically analyzed by fixed or mixed linear and non-linear regression models. In order to possess the among-plot variability, we propose stochastic differential equations that are deduced from the standard deterministic dynamic ordinary differential equations by adding the process variability to the growth dynamic. The advantage of the stochastic differential equati...
